Golden Goal: Ghana Knocks USA Out of FIFA World Cup 2010

Gahna knocked the USA out of FIFA World Cup 2010 with a Golden Goal from Asamoah Gyan.

With this, his third goal of the tournament, Gyan became a national hero. The victory puts Ghana, the last African nation in the tournament, into the quarter finals — just the third African team to do so in World Cup action. Said Asamoah Gyan of the Ghanian win, “Yeah, third African country qualified for the quarter-finals. We’ve made everybody proud. Not Ghana alone, the whole of Africa.”

Despite best efforts from Landon Donovan and the USA squad, Ghana scored in the third minute of injury-time. This result will be a stinging blow to USA soccer — in Germany at the the World Cup in 2006, Ghana knocked the USA out with the same score of 2-1 in the final match of the group phase.

Team USA coach Bob Bradley said of the game, “I really felt when we got to 1-1 there were some chances for us. Early in the overtime we go down again early. At that point, with everything we put into the game early, we didn’t have enough after that.”
