The Forgotten Games of India

Gen Y's time is now spent couched in front of TV, play stations, Xbox, social networking with their classmates and zero physical activity involved. Running back from school and joining friends to play a game of lagori or  winning the most number of goti’s from other street kids is what our parents are often caught ranting about, and how the present generation is not as lucky as they were back in school.

So listed below are some of the games we played as kids and our kids will just read about in books if the games are not revived in the right sense (Apps on your smart phones with same names will hardly serve any purpose)

Lagori: Two teams, seven stones, a ball and target of hawks eye are the elements to success in this game which can leave the two teams in tears when played with full spirit.

Kancha(Goti):  Rounded green glass balls(also called Kancha) aimed with the right trajectory at another goti can split it into two. This game famous in country side has kids winning and displaying their ostentatious collection to the other street kids

Lattu: A solid turnip shaped wooden toy, with a nail struck at the rear end is made to spin using a cotton thread. You can be declared a hero if your lattu is caught mid air it spins on your own palm for sometime.

Gilli Danda: The outstanding combination of four inch danda and a gilli sharpened at the corners will prove to be a great entertainer. The danda used to drive the gilli forward needs a little knack and wit gathered over a period of time

Chouka: Halved tamarind seeds or sea shells are thrown on ground and the subjects ( crude broken bangle pieces or stones- as chosen by the player) are moved closer towards the target which is the center of the square drawn. This game will just need two players and a surface to draw the square. Kids are usually found squatting on floor and winning games in a row.

Hopscotch: A tile piece with a flat surface and six boxes drawn in style has been kids’ favorite for a long time now. Patience and self control is the mantra to win this game which is played in a group.
