9 Greatest Feats of Human Engineering

Humans are known to be great artists, and their artistic works are seen through ages. Painters, artists, musicians and engineers are all creative people who have made a mark in the world trough their art. Engineers are people whom we owe a lot as they make the world look much better and neat. With different creations of buildings, monuments and other things, man have evolved gradually making the most use of things around has even made a monument which can be seen from the moon. Here are the 10 best pieces of human engineering from the ancient Egyptian Pyramids to the recent stunning Burj Khalifa and many more.

Three Gorges Dam

This is a hydroelectric dam located in Yichang, Hubei province of China. Its construction began in December 14, 1994 and is owned by China Yangtze Power (subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corporation). This dam flooded some of the prominent cultural and archaeological site and also displaced around 1.3 million people. It is 2,335 meters (7,661 ft) long and the top of the dam is 185 meters (607 ft) above sea level. The manufacturing cost of this dam is estimated to be US $26 billion.

Hagia Sophia
Is a former orthodox patriarchal basilica which was later converted to a mosque and which is now a museum. It is located in Istanbul, Turkey. It was built with Ashlar brick and is 82 meters in length. It is believed that this monument had its construction beginning in 532 and the same was completed in 537 which was approximately 1474 years ago.

Florence Cathedral
This main church in Italy is popularly known as the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower. The architects behind this massive monument are Arnolfo di Cambio, Filippo Brunelleschi. The construction began in 1296 in Gothic style and was completed structurally in 1436. The exterior of this monument is designed brilliantly with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has a resemblance of the 19th century Gothic Revival. The dome was once considered to be the largest in the world and it is one of the biggest churches in Italy.

Burj Khalifa
It is a sky scrapper in Dubai and is considered to be the tallest man made structure in the world. It officially started its construction on 21 September 2004 and was opened to public on 4 January 2010. This sky scrapper has 30,000 homes, nine hotels, 3 hectares of parkland, atleast 19 residential towers, Dubai Mall, and a 30 acre manmade lake Burj Khalifa Lake. The architect of this great massive structure is Adrian Smith.

Millau Viaduct
Is considered to be the world’s tallest bridge with one mast's summit at 343.0 meters (1,125 ft) above the base of the structure. This is a cable stayed road bridge that spans the valley of the river Tarn in Millau, Southern France. The construction cost of this giant bridge is estimated to be 400 million euros. It was opened to traffic on 16th December 2004. It is the 12th highest bridge in the world at 890 feet high below the road deck.

Large Hadron Collider
Is known to be the world’s largest and highest energy particle accelerator. It was constructed by it was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) from 1998 to 2008 with the aim of allowing physicists to conduct tests and predict different theories. This Large Hadron Collider is expected to answer some of the most significant and fundamental questions in physics.

Colosseum
Originally known as Flavian Amphitheatre is an amphitheatre in the centre of Rome, Italy. It is one of the largest theatres built in the Roman Empire and is considered to be the greatest works of all Roman architecture. The construction of this monument began in 72 AD and was completed in 80 AD under the supervision of Titus. It has a seating capacity of 5000 spectators and it is also Rome’s most popular tourist attractions. The construction of this historical monument was under the guidance of emporer Vespasian.

Pyramids
Is a form of structure whose shape is roughly that of a pyramid in the geometric sense; that is, its outer surfaces are triangular and converge to a single point at the top. The base of a pyramid can be trilateral, quadrilateral, or any polygon shape, which means that a pyramid has at least three outer triangular surfaces (at least four faces including the base). Pyramids are known to be built in the demise of an emperor or as a tribute to a member from the royal family. These massive structures are known to be a great creation for its engineering significance.

Great Wall of China
Is a very famous man made monument and it is known to be the one and only man made creation that can be seen from the moon. The Great Wall stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east, to Lop Lake in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia. This creation is a series of fortifications made of brick, stone wood, tampered earth which is built along an east to west line across the earlier or historical borders of Northern China.
